The Internet age requires the development of Digital Intelligence that allows young people to make the most of the opportunities that technology allow them in their academic and personal lives. Under this premise, 'Digital Leaders', a project launched in 2019 by Fundación Telefónica in the Valencian Community and the Ministry of Education of the Generalitat with the goal of raising awareness of the responsible use of the Internet from the early ages.
A total of 113 Telefónica Volunteers (company employees) developed during 2019 a series of workshops for the entire educational community (students, teachers and parents) with practical training in the development of 8 skills that are considered necessary to work on digital intelligence: screen time, privacy, identity and fingerprinting management; developing of critical thinking and empathy; cybersecurity management and response to cyberbullying.
The first edition of the project started in 26 schools chosen together with the Ministry of Education of the Generalitat, with 553 teachers, 512 parents, and 3,113 students between 8 and 16 years old. The conclusion among educators has been unanimous in the schools where the project has been developed: 'We had never been told about the positive things that technologies have, only about the dangers. Digital Leaders has allowed us to see with different eyes the reality of new technologies and to be able to solve the doubts that both our students and children may have'.
